DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT
The Department of Environmental Management is also one of the five academic departments in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The Department commenced fully in the 2018/2019 Academic session. In 2018/2019 the Department registered 20 students. For the 2019/2020 Academic session the Department registered a total sixty – one students. Seventeen 200 levels students and forty four 100 Level students.
PHILOSOPHY
The earth is witnessing both natural and human induced environmental changes on a large scale and at a pace that is unique in recent time. Increased levels of greenhouse gases are warming the planet, the extinction of species is occurring at an ever faster rate, renewable resources such as atmosphere, water, fauna and flora are being degraded and finite resources such as fossil fuels are having negative impacts on the fragile interconnected natural ecosystem. The aim of establishing the Department of Environmental Management Technology therefore, is to cultivate a new profession that manages earth systems in ways that ensure the long term viability of life on our planet.
This will emphasize integrated thinking and learning so that graduates will understand beyond linear fragmented approaches to holistic planning for environmental sustainability. In line with this understanding and other globally significant environmental issues, Nigerian Army University Biu complied with the directives of National University Commission by establishing the Department of Environmental Management Technology. The Department therefore, aims at training and educating top, medium and lower levels skilled man power with a view to attaining sustainability without compromising the present for the future.
BASIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTED COURSE DURATION
To qualify, a candidate prospecting to have a B.Tech. Honours in Environmental Management Technology must satisfy either of the following entrance requirements.
UTME: Candidates must satisfy all University entry requirements including the required five credits in relevant subjects obtained at not more than two sittings. The qualifying subjects must include passes at credit level in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography or Physics. The entry point is 100 Level.
Direct Entry: Direct entry candidates will normally enroll at the 200 Level. To qualify for direct entry, a candidate must satisfy the UTME requirements set out, that is lower credit in National Diploma (ND), A-Level/IJMB or equivalent in at least two subjects, one of which must be Chemistry, Biology or Geography. The passes in the two subjects must be obtained at one sitting.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
To be eligible for the award of the B.Tech. (Hons) Environmental Management Technology, a candidate must have satisfied the following conditions: The Normal University requirements. The approved requirements of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences including general studies, with respect to approved curriculum and registered courses for the duration stipulated by the Department of Environmental Management Technology. The Departmental requirements include satisfactory completion of all compulsory courses and approved elective courses. In addition to the above, a candidate must have satisfactorily completed industrial attachment for not less than nine month months in the relevant fields.
