Mr Yahaya Abdulkarim, mNASA is the Ag. Dean, Student Affairs Division, he awaits a Ph.D. degree with specialization in Criminology from Bayero University Kano. He received the M.Sc. Sociology (Criminology) and B.Sc. Sociology degrees from the same university. Prior to that, he started his educational carrier in Bayero University, Kano in 1993 wherein he obtained Diploma Certificate in Crime Management in 1996. He is a member of Nigerian Anthropological & Sociological Practitioners Association (NASA). Abdulkarim started his lecturing carrier in 2001 with College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Keffi. He later proceeded to the State Polytechnic Lafia, Nasarawa State, as a pioneer IJMB lecturer.
He served as the unit head for 3years (from 2003-2006) before joining the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa as a pioneer lecturer of IJMB programme. Therein, he led IJMB Sociology students to obtain the overall best result in Sociology during their first outing in 2006. He was equally a pioneer lecturer of Diploma in Crime Management in Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa and also of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, having been employed as a part-time lecturer under the Sociology Department. He left Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa to join the Nigerian Army University, Biu in 2019.
Drawing from the previous experiences in the teaching of Sociology, Criminology and Crime Management, Abdulkarim worked to review the foundation syllabus for the initial take-off of Criminology and Security Studies programme in NAUB. He has authored and published scholarly works in both local and international journals of repute. He has a clear, logical mind with a practical approach to problem-solving and a determination to see things through to completion. He was born in Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, on 15 June, 1972. Yahaya Abdulkarim is married with children.
The Student Affairs Division
The Students’ Affairs Division is a component of university system created for administration and management of students’ issues. It is the unit that organizes the students’ programme in the university system. The unit support students’ development within the studentship in the school. The Dean of Students’ Affairs, who is a member of the academic staff of the University and by virtue of the office a member of senate, is the head of the Division.
He/she is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor and is directly responsible to him/her for the day to day running of the Division and for the conduct of students’ affairs. The Dean is assisted by Students’ Affairs Officer, who is a senior member of the administrative staff from the Registry and handles the secretariat work of the Division.
Student Affairs Division is divided into the following units
Office of the Dean
The Student Affairs Division is headed by a Dean with some support staff to assist in achieving the set Vision and Mission of the Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB). The Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs is to coordinate all non-academic affairs of the students and is designed to attend to the following:
- Organize and coordination of orientation programme; for new students to educate them about university life and various challenges they would face in the course of their study;
- Promotion for the welfare and general wellbeing of students
- Offering guidance and counselling service to identify and assist students who are pruned to cultism or violence and counselling for underperforming students;
- Supervision of various campus programmes
- Responsibilities towards issues that involve student academic duties and student life,
- Socio-individual counselling and Job facilitation for graduating students etc.
- Oversees the disbursement of Bursary Awards to Students by the various States that pay bursary to their students.
- Promotion of peaceful coexistence between students, staff and other stakeholders in the university;
- Recommendation of corrective measures when the rules & regulations of the university are violated.
- Provision of adequate accommodation and facilities for students in halls of residence
Central Administration Unit: This unit is under the supervision of Student Affairs Officer who is a senior registrar staff. His/her task is to coordinate all the administrative work of the division under the directives of the Dean. He handles among others; student welfare matters and liaises with relevant organization on behalf of the students. He/she organizes lecture on orientation programme and handles matter relating to NYSC etc.
Guidance and Counselling Unit: The unit is responsible for the mental health issues of students. It deals with social, personal, emotional, academic and other issues. It is the function of the unit for the fight against substance abuse. It offers advice to student on employment matters, organizes lectures, excursion and provides information on career prospects of students.
Student Relation and Hall Administration Unit: This unit monitors student’s welfare and social events in the halls of residence. It allocates accommodation to students and ensures proper maintenance of hostels. Under the supervision of Student’ Relation Officer he/she enforces all rules and regulations governing hostel accommodation. He/she keeps up to date records Hostel Accommodation. He/she reports to the Dean through the Student Affairs Officer on all matters relating to student’s relation.
Sports and Recreation Unit: This Unit is responsible for providing sporting facilities and equipment for the students. The sport officer of the Unit coordinates the use of campus sports and recreation facilities in cooperation with other user units such as athletic, physical education and student activities and also provide participation in a variety of recreational sport activities which satisfy the diverse needs of students, faculty and staff.
