DEPARTMENT OF URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning is also one of the five academic departments in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The Department commenced fully in the 2019/2020 Academic session with a total of eighteen registered students.
PHILOSOPHY
The 21st century has been described as the century of the cities and globalisation. With the current high rate of urbanization globalisation has effects on cities, region and rural settlement in various ways and the proportions. In global terms, cities are at the forefront of economic activities, change and opportunity. Nigeria is in dearth need of more qualified professional planners. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Nigerian Army University Biu, Borno State, is established and inspired to produced qualified town planners not only to fill the gap and plan Nigerian cities and regions, but to also conveniently compete with their colleagues in the public and private sector in Nigeria and beyond in line with the University’s vision.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTED PROGRAMME DURATION
Entry requirements into the department are in accordance with JAMB/NAUB guidelines. Depending on the qualification, admissions into Urban and Regional Planning Department can be at any of these levels:
FIVE-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME (UTME CANDIDATES):
UTME entry candidates enroll at 100 Level. To qualify for that, Candidates must have earned the acceptable overall score from UME in Mathematics, English Geography and any of the following subjects: economics, government, History or other related subjects. To be registered candidates must have passed five credits in ‘O’ level General Certificate of Education (GCE), West African School Certificate (WASC), National Examination Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its’ equivalents, three of which must be mathematics, Geography and English. The two others may be from among either of Economics, Commerce, Economics, Biology, Technical Drawing Fine Arts, Government and History, and with at least a pass in Physics
FOUR YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME (DIRECT ENTRY CANDIDATES):
Direct entry candidates normally enroll at the 200 Level. To qualify for that, candidates must be holders of National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Urban and Regional Planning, Building, Civil Engineering, Surveying and Geoinformatics Estate Management, Architecture, or Civil Engineering. in addition to the ‘O’ level requirements of 100 level as in the above. Holders of IJMB must obtain a minimum of 6-8 points in at least two of the following, Mathematics, Physics and Geography and the admission must satisfy the entry requirement for 100 levels.
REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION / THE AWARD OF DEGREE
To be eligible for the award of B. Tech URP, in Urban and Regional Planning, a candidate must have satisfied the following conditions: The normal University requirements, the approved requirements of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences including general studies, with respect to approved curriculum and registered courses for the duration stipulated by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. The Departmental requirements include satisfactory completion of all compulsory courses and approved elective courses. In addition to the above, a candidate must have satisfactorily completed industrial attachment for not less than six months in a relevant field.
