PREAMBLE
Surveying profession has been revolutionized as a result of Computer Automation and Information Technology. This has affected the methods of data acquisition, data analyses, data presentation and data management; and made every process in surveying to be digital. The training of future Surveyors should not be left out in the process of digitization. The training ingredients, which include: training institutions, Personnel, Equipment and Curriculum should be properly mended to follow the trend.
There is therefore the need to move with the World for the acceptance of our products anywhere in the World. The subject of this proposal is to address the curriculum.
In line with this assertion, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has published a Benchmark Style for Minimum Academic Standard for Surveying and Geoinformatics Degree Programmes. The Surveying and Geoinformatics of this University should be poised to this current curriculum. The National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark 2007 and SURCON for Minimum Academic Standard in Surveying and Geoinformatics Degree Programme is aimed at giving students of Surveying and Geoinformatics in various Universities a uniform training in such a way that trained surveyors’ world over will have no problem in practicing the profession anywhere.
The Programme is designed on curriculum based on the current NUC Minimum Academic Standard for surveying and Geoinformatics Degree Programme and contributions of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON). It is also in line with other surveying degree-awarding institutions that have changed their curriculum to tally with the new name of Surveying Programmes and Departments; “Surveying and Geoinformatics”.
The Department is therefore forwarding this curriculum to the Committee of Studies of the School of Environmental Science for consideration and onward transmission to the Academic Planning Unit and the Senate of Nigerian Army University Biu.
