Dr. Emmanuel Luke Balami is currently the Head, Department of Management, comprising three programmes (B.Sc. Economics; B.Sc. Management, and, B.Sc. Transport & Logistics Management). Balami backs a B.Sc. (Hons) Bus. Admin., & M.Sc. Management, Univ. of Maiduguri.; Ph.D. Management, University Putra, Malaysia. He is a member of professional bodies including; Nigerian Institute of Management, Teacher Registration Council of Nigeria, Asia-Pacific Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering, Association of Business Specialists and Entrepreneurs, and CISCO Associate.
Balami had an early carrier in computer hardware after his training in Computer and Mathematics at The Federal Polytechnic Mubi (1994), where he obtain a distinction. After brief engagement with the Borno State Government, Balami joined the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) 1995-1999 where he served as Head of Computers in Northeast Nigeria. After the disbandment of PTF, Balami went into a full time computer consulting, training, repairs and other associated businesses at that early stage of computer awareness in Nigeria. By 2003, Balami joined the Computer Centre, University of Maiduguri as a Technologist, 2007 joined the Department of Computer Engineering, University of Maiduguri as a pioneer staff (Senior Technician) during which he supervised numerous Engineering students’ final year projects.
Over the years, Balami’s computer knowledge/works, experience with Managers and Government Executives instill in him the desire to interface Management and Technology. In 2010/2011, he carried out a research leading to the award of M.Sc. on, e-Commerce awareness and practice among academics in Federal Universities in Northeast Nigeria, the outcome showed little awareness and practice of e-Commerce among the population, and recommended for education on eCommerce. Shortly, (2012) the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced the first trial on cashless policy.
In furtherance to his quest to use technology ease management practices, Balami designed a technology to enhance water use control at user end, this model earned him an international grant from International Business Machines (IBM), USA, under a global competition on- “Students for a Smarter Planet) as, one of the only two from Asia during Balami’s Ph.D. candidature in 2015. As part of his community service, Balami have volunteered services both within and out of Nigeria. Recently, in 2022, Balami engaged in collaboration with Biu emirate, FRSC Biu command, NPF Biu Division, NDLEA Biu command, Association of Tricycle operators Biu and other transportants under the theme – “Sustainable Safe Tricycle Operation in Biu Town”.
Balami has also consulted for NGOs on inclusive governance and IDP and community resilience in Northeast Nigeria. During his headship, three programmes under the Department (Economics, Management, and, Transport & Logistics Management) secured a “Full Accreditation Status” during the 2022 Nigerian Universities Commission accreditation exercise.Balami has written journal articles on diverse topics, with emphasis on application of Technology and/or Management. He has written a book on- “Innovative Management in the Information Age (2019)”.
Historical Background of The Department
The history of Management Studies Department can be traced back to the establishment of the Programmes in the Faculty of Arts, Management and Social Sciences.
The Faculty offered a full range of Arts, Management and Social Sciences related qualifications for students the department of being one of the pioneer department in NAUB Commenced academic activities in January 2019 (2018/2019) academic sesseion.
It is remarkable to know that, the pioneer Heads of Department is Prof Abdullahi A. Malgwi. Pioneer head completed his sabbatical leave in January 2020 while Mr. Samuel Ahmed Balami temporally acted during which Dr. Emmanuel Luke Balami was appointed as substantive head of Department and overseeing four Units (Accounting, Economics, Management and Transport & logistic Management) for a two year tenure (2019/2020 to 2020/2021). The department sought for competent individual academics that could the Department on a proper academic foundation. The Department is blessed with renowned scholars. The Department trains Students to use Management innovation theories and principles in decision making in world management business enterprises.
Presently, the Department of Management housed three degree programmes:
