History of the Department

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning took off in 2018/19 Session with two staff and 18 students. The Department has made steady growth since then having increased its staffing and students’ population as well as its programmes. The Department currently offers courses of study and research leading to the award of B.Tech. (Hons) in Urban and Regional Planning. All our programmes are fully recognized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC).

General Philosophy

The philosophy of Urban and Regional Planning Programme of the NAUB, Biu is geared towards professional practice, teaching and research. The programme considers planning as a means through which we can bring about a harmonious relationship between man, the built environment and nature.
Vision of the Department The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, NAUB, Biu aims at training highly qualified professionals and sub-professionals in the fields of Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Management, and Urban Design who could utilise the existing and evolving theories and dynamic practical skills in solving settlements planning problems of today and tomorrow.

Mission of the Programme

The mission of Urban and Regional Planning Department, NAUB, Biu is to provide a conducive interactive platform for students, staff, community and their resources for achieving a harmonious living, working and recreating environment.

Philosophy

The programmes of Urban and Regional Planning being run in the NAUB, Biu consider planning as a means through which we can bring about a harmonious relationship between man, the built environment and nature. We see Urban and Regional Planning as the art and science of ordering and managing land uses based on detailed understanding and analysis of societal needs, goals and objectives within the socio-economic, physical and environmental framework. We see it concerned with the formation, designing, implementation and monitoring of land use plans and policies at the local, urban and regional levels. It is a broad-based discipline requiring comprehensive education and training in the planning, designing and management of the total environment both from the theoretical and practical perspectives. It is the understanding of these societal demands on the planning profession that is at the background of the running of Urban and Regional Planning programme at the NAUB, Biu.

Aims and Objectives

Aims
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, NAUB, Biu aims at training highly qualified professionals and sub-professionals in the fields of Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Management, and Urban Design who could utilise the existing and evolving theories and dynamic practical skills in solving settlements planning problems of today and tomorrow.
Objectives
The broad objectives of the course of study in Urban and Regional Planning are:
a) to provide a broad based education and training which will assist in developing the student’s intellectual and professional
capabilities to a high standard;
b) to produce a sound generalist professional planner who can operate effectively in the field of Urban Planning and related activities.
c) to utilise existing community planning problems as practical case-studies in prescribing professional explanations and solutions to identified and perceived human settlements problems.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives to achieve the above general objectives include:
a) to develop student’s understanding of Urban and Regional Planning through exposure to theories, methods and techniques for planning, designing and managing land use and environmental dynamics.
b) to assist the students to acquire constructive understanding of the relation between the social, economic, technological and legislative framework of society within the physical and other integrative social and economic planning processes requiring a comprehensive education and training in the planning, design and management of the total environment both from theoretical and practical perspectives.
c) to provide students with varied practical experience of realistic planning problems,
d) to encourage the students to develop interest in particular planning skills and research methods, and
e) to undertake planning education amongst community members in order to balance the client-professionals relationship in the course of environmental planning
