Associate Professor Vivien Bello-Osagie is the Director of the Directorate of General Studies at the Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB), and an Associate Professor in the Department of Languages. She holds a B.A. (English Language) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, an M.A. (English for Specific Purposes), and a Ph.D. (English for Specific Purposes) from Modibbo Adama University, Yola. She is a member of several professional associations, including the Pragmatics Association of Nigeria (PRAG), English Studies Association of Nigeria (ESAN), Systemic Functional Linguistics Association of Nigeria (SYFLAN), Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), National Association of AI Practitioners (NAAIP), Association of Ranking Professionals (ARP), and Association of Cybersecurity Practitioners (ACSP).
Associate Professor Bello-Osagie began her academic career during her National Youth Service at Modibbo Adama University, Yola, where she served as a Graduate Assistant before joining the University as a Lecturer and Researcher. Throughout her career, she has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English Language, English for Specific Purposes, Discourse Analysis, Pragmatics, and Communication Studies, while supervising numerous undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. She later joined the Nigerian Army University, Biu, in 2021 as a Senior Lecturer and has continued to provide leadership in teaching, research, academic administration, and institutional development.
She has held several strategic administrative positions, including Acting Head, Department of English, Modibbo Adama University; Coordinator, Pre-degree Programme; General Studies Programme Coordinator, Centre for Distance Learning; Editor of the University Bulletin; Writer and Editor of the University Annual Report; Head, Department of Languages, Nigerian Army University, Biu; Dean, Student Affairs; University Orator; Chief Editor of the NAUB Bulletin; Member of the University Governing Council; and Visiting Lecturer at Adamawa State University, Mubi. These appointments reflect her extensive experience in university administration, curriculum development, quality assurance, academic planning, and student development.
Associate Professor Bello-Osagie is an accomplished scholar whose research interests include Critical Discourse Analysis, Systemic Functional Linguistics, English for Specific Purposes, Translation Studies, Media Discourse, Communication Studies, Corpus Linguistics, and interdisciplinary scholarship. She has authored, co-authored, and edited numerous scholarly books, journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings, making significant contributions to linguistic research, discourse studies, higher education, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her research has also been supported through nationally and internationally funded projects, including TETFund Institution-Based Research and UNICEF/British Council research initiatives on peacebuilding and conflict communication in North-East Nigeria.
She is committed to continuous professional development and has earned several professional awards and certifications with distinction in Artificial Intelligence for Higher Education, Research Project Management, Cybersecurity, Digital Survey Tools for Research, Grant Proposal Writing, Open and Distance Learning, and University Rankings for Global Visibility. She has participated in numerous national and international conferences, workshops, and capacity-building programmes, including TETFund-sponsored research and grants management training, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) capacity-building programmes, and peacebuilding initiatives organised in collaboration with the Nigerian Army.
The Directorate of General Studies
The Directorate of General Studies is a central academic unit of the Nigerian Army University, Biu, established to coordinate, administer, and continually improve the General Studies (GST) Programme for all undergraduate students. The Directorate provides students with a broad intellectual foundation by equipping them with essential competencies in communication, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, civic responsibility, leadership, and interdisciplinary learning in line with the National Universities Commission Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).
The Directorate is headed by the Director, who is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor and is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and quality assurance of all General Studies programmes. The Director works with academic and administrative staff to ensure effective curriculum implementation, continuous improvement, and the attainment of the University’s educational objectives.

Office of the Director
The Office of the Director coordinates all academic and administrative activities of the Directorate and is responsible for:
- Developing, reviewing, and implementing the General Studies curriculum in accordance with NUC CCMAS requirements.
- Coordinating the delivery of General Studies courses across all faculties and departments.
- Promoting excellence in teaching, learning, assessment, and curriculum innovation.
- Organising capacity-building programmes and pedagogical training for General Studies lecturers.
- Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and integrating emerging issues such as entrepreneurship, digital literacy, peace and security, climate change, and civic education into the curriculum.
- Supervising course evaluation, examination moderation, and quality assurance activities.
- Providing academic guidance on matters relating to the General Studies Programme.
Curriculum Development and Review Unit
This Unit develops, reviews, and updates General Studies courses to ensure alignment with national policies, global best practices, and the evolving needs of higher education. It also coordinates the preparation of course materials and other instructional resources.
Quality Assurance and Assessment Unit
The Unit monitors teaching quality, student learning outcomes, and assessment practices within the Directorate. It oversees examination moderation, curriculum evaluation, and continuous quality improvement to ensure compliance with University and NUC standards.
Training and Capacity Building Unit
The Unit organises professional development programmes, workshops, seminars, and training for academic staff on innovative teaching methods, educational technologies, curriculum delivery, and emerging trends in higher education.
Research and Innovation Unit
The Unit promotes research, scholarly publication, and innovation in General Studies education. It encourages interdisciplinary research collaborations, supports curriculum-based research, and facilitates the integration of research findings into teaching and learning.
